The Series 0 Shinkansen was the first Shinkansen train that appeared in 1964. It was the first train in the world to exceed 200 km/h in commercial operation, and was a major stimulus to the development of high-speed railroads in other countries, such as France's TGV and Germany's ICE. Although the actual car is no longer in service, it is an important car in the world's railroad history and has been preserved not only in Japan but also in the United Kingdom and Taiwan. 0系新幹線は、1964（昭和39）年に登場した初代の新幹線用電車です。
世界で初めて営業運転において最高時速200km／hを越えたこの車両は、フランスのTGVやドイツのICEなど、他国の高速鉄道開発にも大きな刺激を与えました。
実車は既に現役を退いていますが、世界の鉄道史においても重要な車両であり、日本はもとよりイギリスや台湾などでも保存されています。最小走行半径はR45と大変コンパクトです。
