Meanwhile, Hazuki, a white fox who has come to help Sadamichi through a mysterious connection, is serving the princess, whom she considers like a younger sister. However, when Nakamitsu no Kimi, an older wife who strictly educates the princess, arrives, she begins to develop a rivalry with her in some way. Eventually, Tousuke, who was assigned to work at the princess's mansion, became enchanted by Tama, and perhaps because of Tama's influence, Hazuki also wielded unexpected power. 郎等の貞道は、上京してきた遠助という男と知り合う。遠助はある橋のたもとで女から小箱を預かり、京の届け先に行くという。小箱はけっして開けてはならないといわれていたが、二人はひょんなことから中を見てしまう。そこには光を放つ玉が入っていた。
一方、貞道と不思議な縁でたすけあうようになった白きつね葉月は、妹のように思う姫宮に仕えていた。しかし厳しく姫を教育する年かさの女房、中務の君がやってきたため、何かと対抗心を燃やすようになる。
やがて、姫宮の屋敷で働くことになった遠助は玉に魅入られたようになり、玉の影響のせいか、葉月もまた思わぬ力を振るってしまう。
