It is also called "tiger stone" because of the blue ripple-like pattern in the pyrophyllite. In Shobara City, where it is produced, there is said to be the mausoleum of Izanaminomikoto, the "god of nation-building" mentioned in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters). Izanami-no-mikoto and her husband Izanagi-no-mikoto were both Ame-no-nuboko, the Japanese goddess of the land, and played an important role in Japanese mythology. パイロフィライトという葉ろう石で、非常に柔らかで、石鹸のように滑る独特の触り心地が癖になります。
青いさざ波のような模様がパイロフィライトの中の模様となって含まれるため、虎石とも呼ばれています。
産地の庄原市には、古事記にも登場する”国つくりの神”イザナミノミコトの陵墓がありとされています。
日本神話の中でも重要な役割を持った一柱であり、イザナミノミコトは夫のイザナギノミコトと
共にアメノヌボコで日本列島を作ったとされます。
