[Cracks in pottery]

This item is coated with glaze. Glazes are used on a wide range of ceramics for a variety of purposes, including protecting the ware from stains, making it impervious to moisture, and increasing the strength of the ware. When glaze is fired in a kiln, it melts at high temperatures and forms a glassy coating on the surface of the ceramic ware.

When fired ceramics are removed from the kiln and allowed to cool, a crack-like pattern appears on the surface. This is called "kan-in," a phenomenon in which the hardened glass layer cracks due to the difference in shrinkage between the base material and the glaze. Basically, the glaze shrinks more, so the penetration occurs on the surface of the glaze, not on the ceramic.

Since the penetration is not caused by impact, there is no problem with the strength of the piece.

[About the peeling*chipping of the material].

Small flakes of material or raised areas on the surface or edges of the dish may be seen, which are caused by a phenomenon called ishihaze. Glazes are mainly composed of earth and stones, including quartz and feldspar, and ishibaku is a condition in which stone grains in the glaze are exposed or bounce off the surface during quenching. Since this is an unavoidable phenomenon in manufacturing with materials of natural origin, it is not regarded as a defect by those who enjoy Shigaraki ware and other ceramics, but is preferred as a scenery when appreciating and touching the ware. Please note that this is a characteristic of the product.

There are individual differences depending on the product, but this also does not affect the strength of the product.
