It is said that no American graduates from childhood without a Hot Wheels, and it is the No. 1 minicar in the world, selling 16 units per second worldwide! In the late 1960s, Mattel, which had achieved great success with Barbie dolls, took the next step and launched Hot Wheels, a line of miniature cars for boys. At the time, Matchbox by Lesney of England already had a dominant market share, but the company gathered talented designers from GM, Ford, and Chrysler to create a minicar with a hot rod design motif and a concept that drove faster than anything made by other companies, and it became a huge hit! The rival minicar company [Matchbox], Lesney, also became a subsidiary of Mattel. The Hot Wheels logo was designed by California artist Rick *Irons, who was working for Mattel at the time, and it fits the extreme deformation of the Hot Wheels miniature cars. The company was originally sold in Japan as Hot Wheels, but changed its name to Hot Wheels in 1999.
