Description
Utamaro Kitagawa is known for his paintings of beautiful women characterized by delicate and graceful lines. He is said to have devised a composition in which the body is omitted and the focus is on the face, as opposed to the conventional style in which the whole body is depicted in the previous paintings. Kansei no Sanbijin is a representative example, depicting three beauties from the Kansei era (1789-1801): Toyohina Tomimoto, Okita Naniwaya, and Ohisa Takashimaya. The furoshiki has a pearlized finish to give the appearance of mica print. The shimmering effect when wrapped gives it an accent. |
