| Touareg Bookmarker [An accessory of the Tuareg tribe known as the "Blue People. The eye-catching brooch-like motif of this bookmarker is an ethnic item that reflects a unique light on the paper. Tuareg Accessories The Tuareg are a nomadic tribe of Berber descent living in Algeria, Niger, and Mali in North Africa. They are also known as the "blue people" or "warriors of the desert" because of the bright blue color of their ethnic costume and the fact that they used to be a belligerent people who sometimes attacked caravans. Unusually for the Muslim world in the Middle East and Africa, the Toaleg form a matrilineal society, where women are given relatively more freedom while men cover their faces and bodies with turbans. Toaleg accessories were used by the Toaleg as a sign of their status or as a kind of passport for nomadic use. Many of the older pieces are passed down from generation to generation as important symbols of home from parent to child. |
