ある日のこと。シヴァ神の妃である女神パールヴァティーは、体を洗って出た垢を集めてこねて、可愛らしい男の子の姿に作りました（神様の垢なので汚くないですよ！）。その子に命を吹き込んで、水浴びをしているから外で見張りをしているようにと言い含めます。そこへ、折しも留守にしていたシヴァ神が帰宅。知らないうちに生まれていた「息子」に驚愕し、浴室の前で通せんぼされたのだから堪りません。怒ったシヴァ神はその子の首をはね、勢いに任せて遥か彼方まで飛ばしてしまいます。水浴びから戻ったパールヴァティーは夫に、すぐに首を戻すようにと命じます。結局元の頭は見つからなかったのですが、旅の途中で出会った象の頭をすげ替えることで今の姿になったと伝えられます。
