The applique technique itself originally originated in Europe, but was brought to India through trade by merchants from the Arabian Middle East, and developed especially in Rajasthan. The lovely sense of life created by delicately cutting out beautifully dyed cloth with typical Indian motifs such as elephants, birds, and the tree of life, and patchworking them onto fine Indian cotton, is a handicraft art culture that cannot be seen anywhere else. *Large size cloth for versatile and convenient use The large fabric, measuring about 115 cm x 180 cm, has a variety of uses. インド・ラジャスターンに位置するバルメール村の特産品、バルメールアップリケを用いた大判布です。アップリケの手法自体はもともとヨーロッパに由来するものですが、アラビア・中東の商人たちが貿易を通じてインドに持ち込み、そしてとくにラジャスタンで大きな発展を遂げました。象や鳥、そして生命の樹といったインドらしいモチーフを美しい染布を繊細に切り抜き、上質なインド綿にパッチーワークすることで生まれる愛らしい生命感は、他では見ることのできない手芸芸術文化です。
