1800年代のイギリス・ロンドンでは、馬車が庶民の足として天井まで市民が乗車するほど大人気でした。そのため天井部分に座席を設置し、誕生したのが2階建てバスだそうです。
市内バス事業が統合された時、バス事業者とメーカーにより異なっていた配色が、当時市内バスシェアのトップであったLGOC（ロンドン・ゼネラル・オムニバス・カンパニー）社の赤色に統一されました。
