昔から、手織り仕事が人々の営みとして根付いた場所です。
この村で数十人の職人グループをまとめるリーダーが、ピントゥーさんです。
代々織物業を営んできた家族から織物に対する情熱を学んできた彼は、 2000年にたった3人の織り手で自らの会社を立ち上げました。
時代とともに廃れつつあった手織り仕事が、彼ら自身の努力、そしてフェアトレードの仕組みを通して、再び活気を取り戻しているのです。
そしてピントゥーさんは、機織りの仕事を女性にも強く勧めてきました。
織りの作業は、男性にも女性にもできる、ひらかれた手仕事です。
ピントゥーさんの行い、そして女性たちの織り仕事への進出は、まだ封建的な価値観が強く残るインドの地域社会に大きな影響を与えました。
