グラノブラスチックは、ベースとなるクォーツァイト（珪岩）に炭酸銅の鉱物（アズライト・マラカイトなど）が沈殿した鉱物です。入り込んだ炭酸銅の鉱物によって、青色や緑色といった美しい発色が生み出されます。アズライトが入り込むと青色の模様となり、マラカイトが入り込むと緑色の模様になるそうです。
グラノブラスチックの名前は、元の岩石に含まれていたクォーツ(石英)が再結晶して大きくなっている粒界部に、炭酸銅の鉱物が沈殿することで、まるで鉱物同士が寄せ木状（グラノブラスチック）に並んでいるように見えることから、この名前が付けられているそうです。
