Masayoshi Kitao (Keisai Kuwagata) Born in Edo, the son of a tatami mat maker from 1764 to 1824. He was an ukiyoe artist active at the same time as Katsushika Hokusai and others, and developed a unique style called shorthand, in which the subject matter is expressed in simple, simplified strokes. He left behind many works with diverse motifs, including people, creatures, and landscapes.
