Description
| -Utagawa Kuniyoshi Ukiyoe artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi captivated the people of Edo with his outlandish imagination and innovative, bold compositions. His works range from heroic heroes to humorous caricatures and animal paintings with a sense of humor. A cat lover, he also left many works with cats as motifs. [Parable of the Cat] This means that he selected some words and proverbs related to cats (and made pictures of them) and listed them side by side. [When a cat washes its face, it rains.] Cats' whiskers are sensitive and become heavy when the humidity rises, so they wash their faces to adjust them, but it does not necessarily rain. People in the past tried to predict the weather based on the behavior of animals. [The cat won't even eat.] The food must be bad. [cat in paper bag] To fall back. To fall back. [The cat and the village headman have nothing to lose.] Just as a cat will always catch a fish or a mouse in front of it, a village headman will inevitably collect tribute from the villagers or take bribes from them. It is a derision of officials who take bribes in the sense that it is inevitable that they will collect tribute from villagers or take bribes from villagers. The word "bribe" is used to ridicule the officials who take bribes. [Cat and dried bonito flakes] When dried bonito flakes, a favorite food of cats, are placed near a cat, it will soon be eaten. It means a dangerous situation where one cannot be too careful. [Cat in a mask] To hide one's true nature and act meekly. [Neko ni koban] To give something valuable to someone who does not know its value, but it is of no use. [A mallet is used to smack a cat's buttocks.] A wooden mallet is not suitable for hitting a cat's buttocks. To use more extensive means than necessary to do a small thing. Unsuitable: a metaphor for not matching. [Cat's tongue] Inability to eat or drink hot food. [hunchback] The appearance of a person with a rounded back and head forward. [Cat face] A person with a face similar to that of a cat, with large eyes and fishing eyes. [cat's tail, with or without a tail] Something that may or may not be present. Not making much difference, not caring. [Surround the cat rather than scold it.] It is more important to be careful not to be caught than to scold when a cat catches a fish. A metaphor for the need to take preventive measures before a problem occurs. |
