Kurikawa Shoten has been making Raimin Uchiwa in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, for generations. Raimin Uchiwa has a 400-year history and tradition, and is one of the leading Uchiwa production centers in Japan. Among the Raimin Uchiwa, Shibu Uchiwa has a unique texture and coloring. Shibu Uchiwa is made by coating the Japanese paper part of an Uchiwa with a persimmon stain to give it a unique luster. The persimmon lacquer not only strengthens the fan itself, but also prevents insects from damaging it.
