Description
| *Goddess of food. Annapurna is known in Hinduism as the goddess of food and fertility. Her name means "full of food (Anna)" in Sanskrit, and she has been widely worshipped in India since ancient times as a goddess who protects the kitchen and a motherly figure who provides food for the family. She is represented as holding a ladle or bowl in her hand and sharing food with others, as if to show the sacredness of cooking. Placed in a place of prayer or in the kitchen, it is said to enrich the family table and foster gratitude for daily sustenance. *Episode with Lord Shiva One day, Shiva said, "All material things are but an illusion (maya). Food is also an illusion. This angered his wife Parvati, who disappeared, and food disappeared from the world, leading to famine. The gods and people, in distress, searched for food but could not find any, and finally Shiva himself went to Varanasi to beg for alms. There, Shiva saw Parvati as Annapurna. She was sharing food with the starving people. Annapurna also gave alms to Shiva, and it is said that Shiva realized that even though he as a spiritual being had transcended hunger, humans and devotees could not live without food. This is a very small statue of a deity, but it is highly recommended for those who love to cook and those who want to remember to be thankful for their food. You will want to display it in an important space in your kitchen. |
