ヒンドゥー教の三大神の一柱であり、特に「保護の神」として信仰されているヴィシュヌ神。宇宙と秩序を維持し、邪悪や混乱が広がると、地上に現れて悪を打ち破るとされています。また、慈愛と寛容の象徴であり、調和と平和を守る役割を担っています。
背後にそびえるのは、無限を象徴する大蛇 アナンタ（シェーシャ） です。
伝承によれば、ヴィシュヌはこの大蛇の上に安らかに横たわり、
宇宙が揺らぐことのないよう見守り続けているといわれます。
蛇が大きく広げたフードは、まるで守護傘のようにヴィシュヌを覆い、
悪しきものや災厄から神を、そして人々を守護します。
