Description
*Traditional instruments from the desert city The kartal (kartal) is a traditional instrument that has been around for centuries, used primarily in prayerful performances. There are various types, but in general they are shaped like wooden castanets and are struck to make a sound. There are simple, plate-like types made entirely of wood, as well as types with small cymbals attached. The earliest form had a bell attached. It is mainly played in the desert cities of Jaisalmer and Barmer in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The word Kartal comes from the Hindi words [Kar] meaning hand and [Tal] meaning rhythm. *Video of Trial Performance *Examples of local performances |
