The first Tiger Mask (Satoru Sayama) was an icon of the era that created a pro wrestling boom on Friday 8:00. Kuniaki Kobayashi became a big heel overnight as the man who unmasked this biggest babyface in the pro wrestling world, Tiger. He later joined the Restoration Army led by Riki Choshu. When Tiger Mask retired, he joined All Japan Pro Wrestling, where he fought against the second Tiger Mask (Mitsuharu Misawa). After returning to New Japan Pro Wrestling, he was the opponent of Jushin Liger (later Jushin Thunder Liger) in his debut match at Tokyo Dome, and after a war with Seishin Kaikan, he joined the Heisei Restoration Army. Former [Weekly Pro Wrestling] reporter Ken Suzuki.txt interviewed Kuniaki Kobayashi about his many famous matches, episodes, and the truth behind various rumors, from the eve of his pro wrestling career to his days as a player and activities after his retirement. Based on his interview notes, he compiled the life of Kuniaki Kobayashi, a taciturn man, as a wrestler. This book [Aesthetics of the Tiger Hunter] is not a memorial book. Initially, the plan was to examine Kuniaki Kobayashi's footsteps using only his testimony and compile it into a single volume. However, on September 9, 2024, less than two months after completing the interviews, Mr. Kobayashi passed away. We parted suddenly without delivering this book to him. The regret we feel cannot be summed up in words. Even so, we could not leave the final words of Mr. Kobayashi in our possession, considering his many accomplishments and the significance of documenting his life and passing it on to future generations. When Mr. Kobayashi passed away, many players and people related to him through the media shared their personal stories and memories of his life, as well as their unspoiled feelings. If the book was to be published as a memorial to Mr. Kobayashi, it should be a collection of such voices, but I felt that this would be different from what he would have wanted before his death. Even though it would be impossible for Mr. Kobayashi to read the book, I decided to use his own words to write about his battles with Tiger Mask, his activities as a member of the Heisei Restoration Army, and even episodes after his retirement, which had excited the Showa era. I have decided to do so. In the past, many books have been published on Satoshi Sayama, the first Tiger Mask, but this is the first time that his rival* Kuniaki Kobayashi has written a book on himself. I hope that you will take this book as a reminder of the life of a man who, while continuing to live his life as a professional wrestler as a by-product of the sport, was no less a presence than the main character, and still lives on in the memories of his many fans. --初代タイガーマスク 佐山サトル
金曜8時にプロレスブームを巻き起こした時代のアイコン、初代タイガーマスク(佐山サトル)。小林邦昭はこのプロレス界最大のベビーフェイス、タイガーのマスクを剥いだ男として一夜にして大ヒールとなる。その後、長州力率いる維新軍に所属。タイガーマスクの引退と共に全日本プロレスに参戦。2代目タイガーマスク(三沢光晴)とも対戦。新日本プロレス復帰後も東京ドームで獣神ライガー(のちの獣神サンダーライガー)のデビュー戦の相手を務め、誠心会館との抗争を経て平成維震軍に参加するなど、中堅レスラーに甘んじず、昭和から平成まで自らの力でポジションを切り拓いてきた。
元『週刊プロレス』記者の鈴木健.txtが小林邦昭にプロレス前夜から選手時代、そして引退後の活動まで数々の名勝負やエピソード、様々な噂の真偽を聞いた。その取材ノートをベースに丹念な取材で寡黙な男・小林邦昭のレスラー人生をまとめあげた。
本書『虎ハンターの美学』は、追悼本ではありません。当初は、小林邦昭さんの証言のみでその足跡を検証し、一冊にする企画でした。
しかし取材を終えて2ヵ月も経たぬ2024年9月9日、小林さんは旅立たれました。本書をご本人にお届けすることなく、我々は突然の別れを迎えたのです。
その無念さは、言葉で連ねられるようなものではありません。それでも小林さんが遺した功績の数々、そしてその生き方を文献にし、後世まで伝える意義を思うと、最後に語った“肉声”をお蔵入りとするわけにはいかなかったのです。
小林さんが亡くなられた時、メディアを通じて本当に多くのゆかりある選手、関係者からその人柄をしのばせる秘話や思い出、そして飾らぬ気持ちが伝えられました。追悼本として出すのであれば、そうした声を集めるべきですが、それでは生前、ご本人が望んだ形とは違うものとなってしまう気がしました。
小林さんに読んでもらうことはかなわずとも、昭和の時代を熱狂させたタイガーマスクとの闘いや平成維震軍としての活躍、さらには引退後のエピソードにいたるまでをご本人の言葉をもとに綴ろう。そう決めました。
過去に初代タイガーマスクこと佐山聡さんに関する書は何冊も出されましたが、そのライバル・小林邦昭個人で一つの書となるのはこれが初めて。バイプレイヤーとしてのプロレスラー人生を歩み続けながら、主役に劣らぬ存在感をまとい、多くのファンの追憶の中で今なお息づく男の一生を、改めて心に刻んでいただきたく思います。
