1860年代にスペインの探検者たちが、スリーピングビューティーマウンテンでターコイズを発見しましたが、

古くから悪霊を払い成功に導く石として珍重して来ました。
1960年代スリーピングビューティ鉱山の採掘権をもった鉱山主の開発で、北アメリカで最大級の算出量を誇る鉱山となりました。
しかし、現在のスリーピングビューティー鉱山では、ごく少量しか採掘できなくなっており、希少性が高まっています。
一般的にターコイズの鉱床は、非常に小さく、多くの有名鉱山は、既に枯渇してしまっているのが現状です。
