観音様本体の背中部分や、足、上部の飾り、印を結ぶ指まで透かし彫刻で彫られた逸品
透かし彫りなので、正面から見た時の立体感がより強調され、神々しいオーラを放ちます。
観音菩薩の起源は中国への仏教伝来よりもはるかに古く、日本では深く信仰の対象とされていることは言うまでもありません。
こちらは水月観音（すいげつかんのん）という種類で、水面にくつろいだ姿で座っている観音様です。
水面にうつった月を眺めている様子が彫られています。
