Description
| *Diya lights up the light of India Brass oil lamps [diyas] have been used in Indian homes and temples for centuries. During Diwali (the festival of lights), diyas are lined up at the entrances and windows of houses and lit to illuminate the darkness and pray for good fortune and prosperity. When made into oil lamps, cotton is twisted into lamp cores and salad oil or ghee is used as fuel. The texture of the ornately carved brass gives the lamp a beautiful presence even when it is not lit. It can be enjoyed not only for worship at the altar, but also as a small container for small items. *What is Diwali? Diwali, the biggest festival in India, is a special day when family and friends gather together as if it were New Year's Day, and the whole town comes alive with lights and fireworks. The festival itself lights up the whole of India as sweet sweets and gifts are exchanged to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and happiness. On this day, small oil lamps [diyas] are lit to light up people's lives as a beacon of hope in the darkness. |
