| *Traditional mud dyeing and indigo blue The beautiful blue of indigo is matched with the traditional Indian patterns of this wonderful cloth. The simple pattern of the mud-dyed (dove-printed) fabric and its calm texture will never bore you. In the mud-dyeing process, a paste of mud, which prevents the fabric from being dyed, is applied to a wood block (wooden plate) with a pattern carved on it and pressed onto the cloth. Then, wheat hulls are sprinkled over the paste and onto the cloth. Then the wheat hulls will stick to the mud and dry in the sun. Then we soak them in the indigo dye solution, let them dry, and stamp them again with a wood block... This process is repeated over and over again until the indigo blue color is achieved. インドらしい伝統的な模様にインディゴの美しい青がマッチングした素敵な布です。泥染め(ダブプリント)によるシンプルなパターンの連なりと落ち着いた風合いは見ていて決して飽きることがありません。
泥染めは、布地が染まるのを防ぐ泥状のペーストを模様が彫られたウッドブロック(木版)につけて布に押していきます。そして布につけたペースとへ、細かくなった小麦の籾殻を撒きます。そうすると小麦の皮が先ほどの泥にくっついてくれるので天日干しします。
そして藍染めの液に浸しては乾かし、またウッドブロックで判子を押して…ということを綺麗なインディゴの青になるまで何度も繰り返し大変手間暇をかけ作られています。この泥染めの歴史は、インドのアコラ村付近で8世紀頃から始まったと言われており歴史のある製法です。
