The dholak (drum), jali (cymbal), nashenga (large curved wind instrument), and the shanai is one of the instruments in this set. These instruments are indispensable for sacred ceremonies, especially weddings, and can be said to be part of the spiritual landscape of the Nepalese people. The shanai is a reed instrument similar to the Indian shahnai. It has a nostalgic and melancholy tone. The ornamentation, including the aperture, is very beautiful (although it is distorted because it is made of soft metal*) and very attractive as an interior decoration. ネパールには「パンチェ・バジャPanche baja」と呼ばれる伝統的な5つの楽器セットがあります。ドーラク（太鼓）やジャリ（シンバル）、ナーシェンガ（大きく湾曲した管楽器）といった楽器たちで、シャーナイはこのセットのなかに含まれる一つです。
神聖な儀式、とくに結婚式には欠かせない楽器群で、ネパールの人々の心の原風景の一つと言っても差し支えないでしょう。
シャーナイはインドのシャハナーイと同様のリード楽器になっています。どこか懐かしいような哀愁を誘うような音色になっています。開口部をはじめ飾りは大変美しく（柔らかい金属で作られているので歪んではいるのですが・・・）、インテリアとしても大変魅力的です。珍しい楽器をお探しの人にぜひおすすめの一品です。
