The name "citrine" comes from its resemblance to the color of the citron fruit. In Japanese, citrine is called "kisuisho" (yellow crystal) because of its color.

There are various theories as to what citrine means, but some examples include "prosperity," "success," "wealth," "happiness," and "hope.
