Description
| *Kashmiri traditional items A very rare item has come from Kashmir, the northernmost region of India. Kashmir is known for its unusually cold weather, which is unusual for India, which has an image of hot weather, and has long nurtured a culture different from that of other regions. One such item is a traditional portable brazier called a kangri, which is made from a combination of an unglazed plate and a woven basket. The kangri, which is made of unglazed plates and woven baskets, is carried inside a long, woolen winter coat, which is also a traditional garment, to keep warm in the harsh winter cold. The Tirakita buying team actually used this kangri in the field, and felt that the charcoal fire inside their bellies kept them slightly warm all winter long, and that they might be able to survive the winter without electricity or kerosene heaters. We felt that we might be able to survive the winter without electricity or kerosene heating. Kanguri has a cultural* symbolic meaning, and in the past it was customary for the bride's family to give kanguri to the groom's family as a wedding gift. The chunky shape of the kangri is quite lovely. It is a shape that could also be used as a small container for small articles. Please use it to think of the distant skies of foreign lands. |
