Sugilite is a natural stone discovered by a Japanese and recognized worldwide as a new mineral. It was named Sugilite after Kenichi Sugi, a professor in the Department of Petrology, Department of Geology, Kyushu University. Its Japanese name is Sugiseki.

Sugilite was discovered on Iwaki Island in Ehime Prefecture in 1944 by petrologists Kenichi Sugi, Masanori Hisatsuna, and others, but at the time, the components contained in Sugilite could not be clearly determined, so it was considered an unresolved mineral and called Iwakiishi. Later, a favorite disciple of Kenichi Sugi, who died of lung cancer at a young age, succeeded in analyzing Sugilite, which had been an unsolved mineral, and in 1977, Sugilite was recognized as a new mineral. The mineral was named [Sugi-ishi] after his mentor who had devoted himself to the study of rocks.

The yellowish green part of the rock is cedarite. Other new minerals such as katayama-ishi, murakami-ishi, and ferroferroformexblende were discovered from this stone. Katayama-ishi is a mysterious stone that is still debated to this day to be Baratoba-ishi, but no conclusion has been reached. Katayama and Murakami stones are said to have fluorescent properties.
