Description
| Ukiyo-e: The Last Glimmer of Ukiyo-e Shinsenga (new prints) were created at the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912) with the aim of reviving Ukiyo-e in a new form, and are characterized by beautiful colors and lyrical expressions. In recent years, shinpanga has become increasingly popular in Japan. While following in the footsteps of Kobayashi Seichika, the last Ukiyoe artist who preserved the lost Edo period, Kawase Tomoe, Yoshida Hiroshi, and others, who are representative artists of shin-hanga, have captured new scenes of Japan. The book features the Muller Collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, as well as rare materials such as photographs from the period. The exhibition traces the last glory of Ukiyo-e and its succession through the eyes of painters who combined tradition and innovation. [Artists featured].
