Hoitsu Sakai was born in Edo, the second son of the Sakai family, the feudal lord of the Himeji domain, between 1761 and 1828. He was well versed in various arts such as haikai and waka poetry, and learned many styles of painting, but he was deeply devoted to Korin Ogata, the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. He was deeply devoted to Ogata Korin and became the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. He left delicate, elegant and lyrical works. His representative works are "Summer and Autumn Plants" and "Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons". |

宝暦11〜文政11年(1761〜1828)、姫路藩主・酒井家の次男として江戸に生まれます。俳諧・和歌など諸芸に精通し、絵も多くの画風を学びますが、尾形光琳に深く傾倒・私淑し、江戸琳派の祖となります。繊細優美で叙情性豊かな作品を残しました。代表作は《重文 夏秋草図屏風》《四季花鳥図巻》。
