1978年スペイン北部のリオハ州の山間の小さな街、アルネドで創業。リオハ州はもともとはインジェクションのスニーカーの産地として有名だが、近辺の村々に熟練した靴職人が散在して、近くのアトリエに委託で商品作成をまかされているのに目をつけたイツリアガ家の人々がエスパドリューの工房を創設。80年代になるとGAIMOブランドで積極的にヨーロッパの展示会に出展するようになり、瞬く間にヨーロッパのみならず北米、アジア、中近東に販路を持つ一大メーカーに成長。デザイナーを6人抱えて常に新しいデザインの追及に余念がなく、その優れたデザイン性は、海外のバイヤーがわざわざGAIMOのコレクションを見るためだけにアルネドに足を運ぶほどである。
