| The handle is wrapped in comfortable leather. The combination of colors in the weave differs from piece to piece depending on the craftsman who makes it, as each item is carefully handmade one by one. The Volga basket is made of a type of grass that grows wild in grasslands, called Napier grass or Elephant grass, which is locally called Nanchem Gulu (Kassena Nankana), Kulukata (Gruni), Kpenpening (Bulk), Kulkara (Dagomba), etc. Kulkara (Dagomba). Most of them seem to grow wild in wetlands near riverside areas or along banks. The weavers cut them and bring them home, cut them to the same length, dye them in many different colors according to their designs, sort them, and store them.
