■ 七島（しっとう）い草について ■
カヤツリグサ科という植物で、畳の材料となります。
似ているもので｢い草｣がありますが、い草の断面は丸いのに対し、七島い草は三角の形をしています。従来は沖縄（琉球）のみで栽培され、琉球畳は本来この七島い草を使ったものを言います。その後、鹿児島や大分へ渡ってきた七島い草は昭和30年代にピークを迎え、それ以降の生産は減少。今では大分県に生産農家があるだけの希少価値の高い作物です。
