Description
SDB, SDY, and all the products with B or Y are made of "No.2 skin" of wild grapes. The bags made of No. 2 skin are the most widely distributed and reasonably priced bags. The skins are taken from the vine of wild grapes and made by skilled craftsmen one by one with great care. The skin of the grapevine absorbs oil, so if the bag is stroked by hand every day, it will absorb the oil and slowly turn into an amber color. The skin of the grapevine absorbs oil, so if the bag is stroked by hand every day, it will slowly change to a candy color and become more shiny. This is called "growing" the bag, and the same bag can have different tints depending on how well it is grown. This is called "raising" the bag, and the same bag can have a unique coloring depending on how it is raised. [The process of making a bag of wild grapes] Gathering the vines It is a plant that has been growing naturally in cold regions deep in the mountains at altitudes of 1,000m or more, far from human habitation. The vines can grow to more than 10 cm in thickness. The vines are stripped, dried, and sized to make baskets. Weaving Weaving is done from the bottom of the bag according to the wooden pattern made by the craftsman. To achieve a uniform mesh, the weaver must have strong fingertip strength to finish the work neatly. Finally, the fine edges are removed and the basket is finished. Technique It takes a skilled craftsman many days to weave a 5mm wide hexagonal flower basket, so mass production is not possible. Therefore, they cannot be mass-produced and are very rare. Therefore, the number of these baskets on the market is limited. Attaching the inner fabric Almost all bags are dyed with persimmon tannin. The raw material is a persimmon tannin solution ordered from a long-established store in Kyoto. Why Kakishibu dyeing? Kakishibu itself has anti-moth* and anti-fungus effects. Although mold does not grow inside the fibers of the wild grape vine like it does in bamboo, it may adhere to the surface if stored in a humid place. However, if it is stored in a humid place, mold may adhere to its surface. To prevent this, we attach a persimmon tannin-dyed inner cloth to almost all of our bags, although it is more expensive. For those who are new to wild grapes If you are a first time owner of the coveted yamabudo bag, the standard "Ajiro-knit" is popular as an introductory version. For those who purchase the second or third bag, "Hexagonal flower weave" and "Sawahada" are very popular. |
