In this book, French artist Philippe Weisbecker visits 12 locations in Japan to document his visit to the makers of local toys related to the Chinese zodiac through drawings, essays, and photographs. Based on the serialization (October 2017-September 2018) of the monthly magazine Geijutsu Shincho (Shinchosha) and Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten's web media [Sanchi: Crafts and Exploration] (sanchi.jp), this book has been re-edited with additions and corrections. Included at the end of the book is a lavish collection of rare interview notes by Philip*Weisbecker himself. Philippe Weisbecker Born in 1942. Artist based in Paris and Barcelona. He has been active in Japan in advertising and exhibitions. He stayed at Villa Kujoyama (Kyoto), an artist*in*residence*program of the French government, for 4 months, and published many books including "HAND TOOLS", a collection of carpentry tools that he painted, and "Philippe Weisbecker Works in progress", a compilation of his past activities. フランス人アーティスト、フィリップ・ワイズベッカーが、干支にまつわる郷土玩具のつくり手を日本各地12か所に訪ねた様子を、デッサンとエッセイ、及び写真で綴った探訪記。
月刊誌「芸術新潮」(新潮社)と中川政七商店のウェブメディア「さんち~工芸と探訪~」(sanchi.jp)の連載(2017年10月号~2018年9月号)をもとに加筆修正を加え再編集。
巻末にはフィリップ・ワイズベッカー自身による貴重な取材ノートを贅沢に収録。

広告や展覧会など、日本での活動も多い。
フランス政府のアーティスト・イン・レジデンス・プログラム「ヴィラ九条山」(京都)に4ヶ月滞在し、描きためた大工道具の作品集『HAND TOOLS』や、これまでの活動の集大成となる『フィリップ・ワイズベッカー作品集 Philippe Weisbecker Works in progress』など多数出版。
