Description
Shirakawa Daruma [daruma] dolls feature a crane on the eyebrows, a turtle on the sideburns, pine and plum blossoms on the ear sideburns, and bamboo on the chin sideburns. It boasts a history of more than 300 years. It is said that it was first made by Sadanobu Matsudaira, lord of the Shirakawa domain, who encouraged Daruma as an off-season job for farmers in order to promote industry. Although it used to be a thriving industry, today there are only two houses left, the Watanabe and Sagawa families. The Shirakawa Daruma Sohonpo, whose founder was a tile craftsman, still makes molds using clay from roof tiles. Shirakawa Daruma is also known as Daiganjo-Daruma. |
