[Characteristics] Among the cedar trees on Yakushima Island, those over 1,000 years old are called "Yakusugi. The grain of the wood is clear and has a top-grained bamboo grain pattern, which gives it exceptional beauty. The wood is hard and contains six times more resin than normal wood, making it antiseptic, antibacterial, and mothproof, and it retains its distinctive fragrance even after processing. Since logging is currently banned, only lumber from before the ban and fallen trees are in circulation, making it an extremely rare high-grade wood. [Uses.] It is used as a high-grade timber for fittings, architectural ceiling boards, drop-lids, balustrades, furniture, crafts, etc. |

長寿の象徴として「厄が過ぎる」とかけて縁起の良い貴重な銘木として珍重されています。
＜特徴＞
屋久島の杉の中でも樹齢1000年を超えるものを「屋久杉」と呼びます。
木目が鮮明で上杢の笹目模様がでている事から格別の美しさがあり、複雑な木目でも狂わないという特徴があります。
材は硬く、通常の6倍ほどの樹脂分を含んでいるため防腐・抗菌・防虫効果があり、加工後も独特の香りが残ります。
現在伐採禁止となっているため、禁止以前の材や倒木のみの流通で、非常に希少な高級木材である。
＜用途＞
建具材や建築の天井板、落とし掛、欄間や家具、工芸品などの高級材として使われる。
