シーシャムウッドとは別名インディアンローズウッドもしくは紫檀（したん）とも呼ばれインド・パキスタン・ネパールの川の流域の標高900〜1300mを中心に自生している他、ハリヤーナー州などの地域で重要な木材として栽培がおこなわれているそうです。暗赤褐色をした大変に固い木で最高級の木材として世界的に知られています。ポリッシュで仕上げると木目が際立ち美しい仕上がりとなります。インドでは小物や家具、楽器、フローリングなど多岐に使われています。
