近代日本画壇の巨匠であり、東洋画の伝統的な線描技法を使わずに
色彩の濃淡によって形や構図、空気や光を表す「朦朧体」と呼ばれる
独特な描画手法を確立した。国内で発表した当初は猛烈な批判を浴び
活動に行き詰まりを見せ始めたため、海外で展覧会を開く。
すると一転高い評価を受け続けた。
海外での評価をきっかけに日本国内でもその画風が徐々に評価されていくこととなった。
大観の作品を模倣した作品も多く贋作が非常に多い画家としても知られる。
