In preparing this book, one of the criteria that came to mind was the Japan Cartoonists Association Award, which is given annually by the Japan Cartoonists Association. It should be noted that this award is different from other manga awards in that it is a "manga award by manga artists chosen by manga artists. Rather than the so-called good or bad sales, or whether or not the work is a big hit, the award is based on the value of the work and whether or not it is outstanding from the manga artist's point of view. Because the works are selected from such a unique professional perspective, it can be said that there must be works that manga fans would like to read and should read at least once. This year's edition of the magazine focuses on story manga, and we have carefully selected from among the many award-winning works to introduce as many award-winning works as possible in the limited space of the magazine, and have included a rich variety of illustrations of some of them. In recent years, the development of e-books has made it possible to read many masterpieces of manga. However, on the other hand, it is extremely difficult to choose from the vast number of works and find the one you really like. そう考えたときに、人それぞれいろんな視点があるはずです。この本を作るにあたって、今回ひとつの基準として浮かんだのが、公益社団法人日本漫画家協会が毎年選出する「日本漫画家協会賞」でした。特筆すべきは、この賞がほかのマンガ賞とは違い、「漫画家が選んだ漫画家によるマンガ賞」であること。
いわゆる売り上げの良し悪しや、大ヒットの有無ということよりも、その作品の価値、漫画家が見て優れているかどうかが、受賞のポイントであり、いわば「プロが選んだプロのための賞」が「日本漫画家協会賞」なのです。
そんな独特なプロの視点で選んだ作品だからこそ、マンガファンなら一度は読んでおきたい、読んでおくべき作品があるはずと言えます。
今回、本書では多くの受賞作品から特にストーリーマンガを中心に、限られた誌面にできるだけ受賞作品を紹介したいと吟味を重ね、その一部を図版を豊富にもり込んで紹介しました。
近年、電子書籍の発展により、多くの名作マンガを読むことができるようになりました。ですが、その反面、膨大な作品の中から選び、自分の本当に好きな作品と出合うことは至難の技。本書はマンガファンと名作マンガとの出合いの一助になる、そんな1冊であれたらと考えます。
