Description
The title [M/W] refers to Wakao's lifelong theme of [Man & Woman]. He made a strong debut in the 1970s with his uniquely Japanese style of expression, and has since worked extensively in advertising and editorial. The world he depicts with his unique lines using a soft pen is full of eroticism, nonsense, and black humor, creating an instinctive and sensual world of Wakao's work. This collection is a compilation of black-and-white drawings that Wakao had been accumulating for his own culminating exhibition of works, and is printed with two types of smudges for a high degree of reproducibility. In addition to his activities as an artist, he was also an art*design educator and devoted himself to the training of younger artists. He served as principal of Sogei Art School, dean of the Faculty of Arts at Tokyo Polytechnic University, and president of the same institution. Many famous designers and illustrators have graduated from his school. Unfortunately, Shinichiro Wakao passed away before an exhibition of his works could be held, but his posthumous works drawn for this exhibition have now been compiled by volunteers into a collection of his works, and an exhibition to commemorate it is scheduled to be held at [Gallery 5610] in Aoyama from May 11 to 28, 2020. [Author] Shinichiro Wakao
