Description
[Leo*Leoni is a well-known picture book author with works such as "Aoi to Kiiro-chan", "Swimmy", and "Frederick". Surprisingly, he started his career as a picture book author at the age of 49, not so early. When we unravel his life, various facts emerge. Born to a Jewish father and a Dutch mother, he grew up surrounded by his uncles' art collections of Klee, Chagall, and others. He studied economics at university but was never interested in it, so he sought a career as an artist in film, art, and graphic design. The rise of fascism forced him to seek asylum in the United States, where he worked with the business magazine Fortune, the US branch of Olivetti, MoMA, and UNESCO, and achieved great success as a graphic designer and art director. He was influenced by Alexander Calder and his good friend Ben *Shahn, and worked on painting and sculpture. After publishing his first picture book, "Aoi to Kiiro-chan," he became seriously involved in the creation of picture books, and in later years he enthusiastically encouraged Eric Carle, whom he had met when he brought his work to Leo while he was art director, to create his own picture books. He was also active in political activities, opposing war and discrimination based on race and gender, and appealing for peace. This book includes caricatures and other drawings discovered for the first time in recent research to support this. What kind of "artist" was he searching for all his life? [Author] Fumi Moriizumi / Kiyoko Matsuoka |

また、戦争や人種や性別による差別に反対し、平和を訴え、政治的な活動に参加する一面もありました。 本書には、それを裏付けるように近年の調査ではじめて発見された風刺画なども収録されています。
