| Kyo-sai Handkerchief Ukiyoe* This handkerchief is carefully printed and sewn one by one by textile printing based on designs derived from fusuma-e (sliding door paintings) and byobu-e (folding screen paintings) of temples and shrines. This beautiful piece expresses the traditional beauty of Japan, depicted as if it were a painting. Cotton loan material is a thin, light and airy plain weave fabric. It is pleasant to the touch and has a luxurious feel. Wind and Thunder Gods (National Treasure) A pair of folding screens from Kenninji Temple in Kyoto. They are said to be the work of Tawaraya Sotatsu, a painter of the Edo period. This elegant handkerchief features a powerful motif of the Wind God and Thunder God in a composition reminiscent of a golden folding screen, with a lively wave pattern undulating in the margin, giving the impression of the work. |
