[Naniwa Hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views of Naniwa) is one of the best-known examples of nishikie (nishikie of famous places) from the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate. This is the first book in Japan to reprint the best-preserved complete set (102 prints in all) in full size and reproduce them in high resolution. As a full-fledged research book, it provides multifaceted commentary on the works from both geographical and art historical perspectives, and includes a variety of essays ranging from an overview to a comparative study of different prints and the painter's work and characteristics. The book also includes a list of works held by each museum and related illustrations*, and aims to be a basic reference work that will contribute to future research.
