かつて日本では自宅で葬式をし、野辺送りで火葬場や埋葬地に向かい、火葬や土葬をするのが普通だった。本書は柳田國男『葬送習俗語彙』（昭和12年刊）に出てくる言葉の中から約180を選び、著者自身の聞き取り調査を盛り込みながら切り絵とともに解説。各地の葬送習俗に使われる言葉は隠語が多く、何を指すのか分からない。その言葉を解き明かしながら伝統的な葬送の風習を見つめ直す。著者自身による切り絵も不思議な魅力。
