As the word implies, this is a technique in which a pattern is carved into a block of wood to make a plate and pressed against a cloth to dye the pattern. Rajasthan and Gujarat are famous for producing this block print. There are many villages specializing in block printing near Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, and each has its own technique and pattern, but the woodblocks are also made of sea sham (Indian rosewood, rosewood) and teak wood. I am using. The woodblock is made by a professional carver, and the line of the plate made by a skilled craftsman can be used clearly for 50 years. The charm of block prints begins with this wooden version, and all comes from the delicate relationship between nature and the unique taste of handicrafts. This is because the color of the dyeing changes slightly depending on the temperature and humidity and sunshine time. For block prints, it is necessary to make woodblocks for each color, layer the colors like pressing a stamp, wash them with water many times, and dry them in the sun each time. The work is done by humans' untiring manual work while adapting to changes in nature in the ever-changing time. Subtle differences that may appear to be flaws to the eyes accustomed to uniformity and identity are also characteristics of handicrafts, and woodblock dyeing with a history from BC continues to fascinate us. May be the beauty of this unpredictable harmony. / 2021 Fall / Winter |
