| This is a fiction book by Takedazu Minoru, known for his picture book series "Dobutsu saiban" (Animal Saiban) and the non-fiction book "Helen the Baby Fox Left Behind" (Helen the Baby Fox Left Behind), which has also been made into a movie. Dr. Genzaburo Nishina works as a veterinarian at a livestock clinic in the city and occasionally takes the pulse of sick creatures in nature at his home near the forest. 絵本「どうぶつさいばん」シリーズ、ノンフィクションで映画化もされた『子ぎつねヘレンがのこしたもの』などの作品で知られる竹田津実氏のフィクション。
街で家畜診療所の獣医師をしながら、森の近くの自宅でときどき自然の中の病んだ生きものの脈をとる仁科源三郎医師。運び込まれる野生動物は、野生にもどすことを目指して診ている。ある日子どもたちが、ふ化してまもないカルガモのヒナを4羽連れてきた。親ガモがちょっと出かけたすきに子ガモだけが残されているのを見て、連れてきてしまったのではないか？ 「きみたちは誘かい犯だ！」と、一緒に拾ったところまで戻るが、時すでに遅し。親ガモは見つからない。人間の手でカモのヒナを育てるのは大変なこと。獣医師とて知らないこともあり、試行錯誤を繰り返しながら、子ガモを育てて、巣立ちをさせるまでを描く。柔らかなイラストに独特の魅力ある文章で、読者も一緒に子ガモを育てる気分にひたれる。
