Description
Ancient bowls in Iwate, three-storied bowls of Shoboji Temple, one of the specialized monasteries of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism in the region. The Shoboji bowls were passed down in Shoboji Temple in Kuroishi, Iwate, and are three-storied bowls in the shape of an oryokuro (a bowl without a base). Shoboji Temple, called Oku no Shoboji, is located in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It was founded in 1348 by a Noto priest, Mutei Ryojo, as the head temple of the Soto sect in both Ou regions. It used to have the status of the third head temple along with Eiheiji and Sojijiji, and the number of branch temples numbered 1,200. The temple is also famous for its stone steps built of serpentine rock since its founding and the main hall with the largest thatched roof in Japan. The Shoboji bowls are characterized by their plain, all-black bowls, which are nested in three sets of three, large, medium, and small. The shape of the bowls is such that the mouth is inwardly curved without a base, and the word "Shoboji" is written on the back of each bowl, hence the name "Shoboji bowl. Since these bowls are the personal belongings of Zen monks, they are shaped to be easy to carry, and the one-soup-and-one-vegetable bowls can be said to be simple in design, with not a single point wasted. The large bowl holds rice, the medium one holds soup, and the small one holds incense, and is still used daily at Shoboji temples. It is one of the three most famous bowls in Iwate. The Shoboji bowls with this design were added 10 years ago and officially started to be made as Shoboji bowls in Iwate. The production of these bowls stopped for a while, but now designshop, in cooperation with Shoboji, has resumed their sales. Shojin ryori (vegetarian food) served at Shoboji Temple is served in these bowls. The pattern is called Kuyo-mon, the family crest of the Date clan. It represents the sun and the planets orbiting the solar system. |
