これまで、バレーボールの世界では、

そして、厳しい指導のもとに、
とにかく敵のスパイクを拾って、
つなぐ「ディフェンスを重視する」
スポーツとされてきました。
しかし、私は、自分自身のたくさんの経験と、
さまざまな失敗から、
子供たちができるだけ自分で考え、判断し、
自由な発想で、想像力をはたらかせながらプレーする
「自主性バレー」を大切にしようと思ったのです。
そして、これまでの小学生バレーボールの常識をくつがえし、
「オフェンスを重視する」チーム作りに取り組みました。
それが、結果として、美しいフォームで、
素早くボールを展開する、
ミスの少ないバレーボールです。
私が指導したチームが、全国制覇を成しとげることができた成果によって、
バレーボールの目指すべき、
ひとつの可能性を示せたのではないかと思っています。
一度身についてしまったクセは、
大人になってからではなかなか直るものではありません。
特に、バレーボールの場合、
小学生のときにどのような技術を身につけるかで、
その後の成長は全くちがってくるといっても過言ではないのです。
また、小学生のバレーボールは、勝利主義だけではいけないと思っています。
大切なのは、バレーボールを通して、
「強い心と体」、そして、仲間や人に対して
「思いやりの心」を育んでいくことです。
そうした意味でも、バレーボールを通して、
目標を決めて仲間たちと共に課題を見いだして取り組んでいくことは、
その後の子どもたちの人生において、
かけがえのない「大きな心づくりの土台」となることでしょう。
