貔貅(ひきゅう)は中国における伝説上の架空の動物です。翼のあるライオンに似ている一種の神獣で「避邪」とも呼ばれています。その名のとおり「邪悪を避ける」動物として三国時代には戦旗の意匠などに用いられていました。一本角、突出する目、蛇の口、蝙蝠(こうもり)の牙、馬の身体、麒麟(きりん)の足、長い髭、双翼、長い尾、身を巻く長い剛毛が胸あるいは背中までつながった姿をしています。「金銀財宝」を主食とし、お尻の穴がないことから「食べた財産(金銀財宝)が出ていかない」という伝説もあります。そして現在では「避邪」というよりも「財運の象徴」としての意味合いが強く、蓄財のお守りとして用いられることも多くなってきました。とくに宝くじや投資、ギャンブルなど「変動性のある財」を四方八方から呼びよせ、蓄財する力が強い神獣といわれています。
