| Since ancient times, dragons have been worshipped as incarnations of gods and Buddha, and as guardian deities. It is believed that dragons bring people prosperity because of their great power, and it has been said that wearing something with a dragon image on it will ward off evil spirits and bring happiness to the wearer. Suzaku is the guardian deity of the south. It is said to manipulate the energy of fire and to ward off evil with its large wings, bringing peace and good fortune. Seiryu is the guardian deity of the East. He is said to be the incarnation of a dragon, and is believed to attract money, prosperous business, and great wealth. Xuanwu is the guardian deity of the north. It is a combination of a snake and a tortoise, and protects against the harsh north winds, bringing prosperity and longevity. The white tiger is the guardian deity of the west. He is said to be the white tiger of the rear gate. Sanskrit characters are closely connected with Buddhism, especially esoteric Buddhism, and are the basis of the ancient Sanskrit language, and represent the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
